A very rare bronze of Heliokles II
Lot 1934
BAKTRIA, Indo-Greek Kingdom. Heliokles II, circa 90-75 BC. AE (Bronze, 22x22 mm, 8.88 g, 12 h), uncertain mint in eastern Gandhara or the western Punjab. ΒAΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΔIKAIOY - HΛIOKΛEOYΣ Diademed and draped bust of Zeus Basileus to right, with scepter over his left shoulder. Rev. 'Maharajasa dhramikasa Heliyakreasa' (in Karoshti) Elephant walking right; below, monogram. Bopearachchi 7 var. (elephant walking left). HGC 12, 384 var. (elephant walking left). Spink 6013 (2006), 21. Very rare. Sharply struck and very attractive. Traces of overstriking on the obverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

Enough of the undertype on the obverse is visible to read '[ΒΑΣΙ]ΛΕΩΣ ΣΩ[ΤΗΡΟΣ]'. While several kings employed the epithet 'Soter', Heliokles II's coins are very often overstruck on those of Strato I, making it very likely that this is the case for our coin as well
